A one-to-one tutor can really help learning and understanding chemistry. It is a difficult subject which requires a good memory and good logical thinking. I can help make this subject easier for anyone who wants to do better in their chemistry exams.
Pupils come for tuition because they
One-to-one tuition can help
I encourage mind maps, good study skills and good organisation, so that the time you spend studying chemistry is more effective.
About me:
I have been a chemistry tutor in Exeter for the past 5 years, helping pupils from most of the surrounding schools including Exeter School, Exeter College, Maynards and Colyton Grammar. I encourage parents to come along at least to the first lesson. They are always welcome to stay and listen or to sit next door. There is no obligation to continue after the first lesson - sometimes people come along for a first lesson and see how it goes.
Teaching Experience:
Chemistry teacher at Mander Portman Woodward 5th & 6th form college, Cambridge.(1999-2000)
7 years as a private chemistry tutor in Cambridge, London and Exeter
Qualifications:
Master of Natural Sciences (chemistry), Clare College, Cambridge, 1999, 2:1
A-levels(1994): Maths(A), Further Maths(A), Chemistry(A), Physics(A), Music(A)
Times and prices:
Most commonly I teach on weekday afternoons and evenings, though other times are possible.
Tuition usually takes place at 72 Wardrew Rd, Exeter.
I charge £25 per hour. (2007/2008)
Approach to Tutoring:
My aim is to provide students with as much help as possible when preparing for their exams. This may take the form of:
Lessons are student orientated. If someone says, “I'm having trouble with these homework questions”, then we get on with that topic. A lesson may involve going through questions, understanding notes or doing revision.
I can cover most of the current syllabuses including EdExcel, OCR, AQA and Nuffield.
Initially I recommend students bring along all their notes and textbooks. Then we can work out which are the good ones!
I encourage good study skills, revision skills and exam technique, and can set and mark homework if and when required.
Do have a look at the A-level chemistry notes I have written, which you are welcome to download (pdf format).
